SC Sue Big Oil is Seeking a Social Media Wiz

Are you interested in taking action to address the climate crisis and participating in a campaign to hold big oil accountable for their role in it? We are looking for a volunteer Social Media Coordinator to help get the message out about the Sue Big Oil campaign!

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Passionate about social media and committed to taking action to help solve the climate crisis.
  • Can commit a few hours a week for at least 6 months.
  • Might be an experienced digital marketer, but that’s not necessary! Ideally you’ve got some experience managing social media accounts on behalf of a business or organization.
  • Has a thick skin! Social media is a great engagement tool, but not everyone who engages with us will be supportive. You will need to take that in stride and respond respectfully.
  • This position would be suitable for a student; perhaps you’re enrolled in some courses in Communications or Digital Marketing, or that might be something you’d like to do down the line.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Your job will be to create a social media presence for our organization in order to drive community engagement and amplify awareness. The ultimate goal will be to get as many people as possible to sign our petition.
  • Help engage Sunshine Coast young people in climate action. Ideally, you would help us engage local high school students in amplifying our social media presence. This might mean connecting with supportive teachers and administrators in the schools.
  • Report on your progress frequently and collaborate with our organizers and tech team on our social media, marketing, and general engagement strategies.
  • Create and maintain SCSBO’s social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram.
  • Represent the SCSBO’s interest and image in the community by engaging respectfully and constructively on social media platforms at all times.
  • Post regularly! You’ll put out original content, cross-post with other local groups and partner organizations, and both moderate and engage with replies to our content in a respectful and constructive way.
  • Attend community events as a representative of SCSBO and take and post photos and reels aimed at amplifying our presence.

What you get out of it:

  • You’ll play a key role in engaging the community and driving the support needed to make this project a success!
  • Attend fun community events and make connections with other volunteers and community members!
  • Get real experience running a social media campaign for a grassroots volunteer organisation!
  • Learn, practice, and demonstrate skills that look great on a resume or university application. We’ll be happy to provide an endorsement or reference for a job well done!

If you’re interested, get in touch with us at media@scsbo.ca. Tell us briefly why you’re interested in this project and what you bring to the role.
